Our Services to Our Community

LCI_CauseArea_Icons_01a-vision.jpg
Since 1925 when Helen Keller gave Lions the charge to be the "Knights of the Blind" in the crusade against darkness, Lions worldwide have committed to vision projects worldwide.  At home, Christiansburg Lions Club works consistently on the following vision projects:
Eye-screening for public school children in our elementary through high school campuses by volunteers to help prevent blindness.  Using the latest technology we utilize the "SPOTS" machine which can read a child's eyes in a matter of seconds to identify and number of sight issues and provide referrals to optometrists in the area to get these issues corrected.  We also collect and recycle used eyeglasses through our Eyeglass Recycling Center in Roanoke, VA we used glasses are cleaned typed and packaged for distribution in third world countries.

Lions work to eradicate world hunger and more especially in our local area.  We work to support backpack programs in Shawsville and Riner area where backpacks are sent home every weekend to provide needed food for families.  According to Feeding America approximately 70 percent of families in our backyard are considered "food insecure" meaning families don't have enough food due to a variety of reasons.

We serve to help build our youth and give them assistance to help strengthen their individual ability to be successful in their pursuits.  Part of this comes from the scholarships that we provide to high school seniors each year at Christiansburg High School, Eastern Montgomery High School, Auburn High School, Radford High School and Floyd High School. One student from each school recieves a $1,000.00 scholarship from the Christiansburg Lions Club.

Lions work to educate and support families with children suffering with all forms of pediatric cancer.  Christiansburg Lions works in conjunction with Carilion Pediatric Cancer Center.  Lions from across our district helped to raise fund for the Cancer Center to provide a safe and sterile environment for children and families to relax and entertain themselves in the "Lions Den" which will be part of the current ongoing expansion.

Lions are guardians of our environment.  Whether conducting a recycling project, planting a tree, performing a litter pick up  along a roadside or dressing up a local park, we want our community to be reflected in the most positive light.  Water conservation, Disaster Clean-ups, and a host of other related activities help to make our world a cleaner and safer place to live, work and play.
LCIF Icon - Disaster Relief.jpg
When disaster strikes, Lions are some of the first ones to provide relief and clean up supplies to an affected community.  Our work is amplified through both our Lions of Virginia Foundation and the Lions Clubs International Foundation by the provision of emergency assistance grants for communities to help them through the crisis.
LCI_CauseArea_Icons_01a-diabetes.jpg
Christiansburg Lions support district projects like financial support to Camp T00 Sweet.  This program works in conjunction with Carilion Clinic to provide a one week day camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes to teach them how to eat, monitor, and better regulate their blood sugar levels in the everyday world.
LCIF Icon - Humanitarian Efforts.jpg
Humanitarian Assistance is our call when there is a need, there is a Lion.  We work in partnership with many local non-profits to ensure that the delivery of essential and needed services are provided without cost.  Not a hand out.....but a hand up
